Boy names

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Well, I asked your opinion a few months back and trust me…I’ve been through your list of suggestions several times. We have a name we both like but can’t agree on the spelling. Sounds dumb but, it might be the reason we don’t use the name. Matt and I are both strong personalities and that’s just the way it is.

Someone left a comment asking about when we’ll announce the name and the way we did it for Adriah was we found out what we were having and told everyone but, we wanted to have something really special to be able to announce at her birth (the date, time, weight and height just didn’t cut it!) So, we kept the name a secret until the minute she arrived. We liked that method and we’re going to use it again! So, I guess you’ll have to keep reading and stay posted for the official word!

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Answering Photography Questions

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

I received this email and wanted to answer the questions for everyone!

My name is Mackenzie Sarna. I’m a photography student at Hennepin Tech in Eden Prairie, and had some questions for you.

How and why did you get into wedding photography? I’ve always loved photography but never thought it as a career option for me. I love so many creative outlets I thought it was just one way I could be creative! In 2002, one of my friends was getting married and ask me to take the pictures. I said “no” 3 or 4 times and she kept asking so, finally I relented. I didn’t want to mess up her wedding pictures and she was willing to take the risk having seen pictures I had taken in the past!

How long have you been shooting weddings? Basically, after people started seeing the pictures from the first wedding, more friends were calling to ask me to do their wedding’s too! I was still working full-time and did 3-5 weddings  those first couple of years.  Then the business just grew from there. I started taking portraits, family, maternity and anything else people wanted! I loved the variety and they loved the final product!

How many weddings a year do you shoot? No more then 15. I know that’s a weird way to answer the question but, it’s the truth. I love my job but, my heart is to be a stay- at-home mom. AND more importantly, I want to do both well! I’ve found that limiting my weddings to 15 allows me that balance. I want to give my brides focused attention and I don’t want my family to suffer. It’s a ton of work and definitely keeps me busy. I also shoot about 30 portrait sessions through out the year…I don’t have a limit on those because they require a lot less time.

What equipment do you use? I use all Canon equipment. I own one Canon 40D, two Canon 30D’s and am planning on buying a Canon 5D next month. For lenses I mainly use a Canon 50mm (1.2), tamron 17-55mm…I’ll be purchasing the Canon 70-200 (2.8) next month as well. I also use upright flashes, a reflector (5 colors included), a couple of tripod…but that’s kinda boring info!

Do you have an assistant or second shooter? Yes!!! I use a second shooter for all my weddings. I don’t know how I did it without them. I usually shoot alone for the portrait sessions but, I have assistant shooters who are really eager to learn all aspects of the trade and they may join me for a couple sessions this year.

How would you define your style? People oriented, focused but also relaxed and fun! I focus a lot on photojournalism…telling people’s stories make me smile.

Thank you for your time! I’ll be watching for your answers, and will let you know if I have any more questions! Thanks again!

I don’t mind answering questions…It’s how we all learn and grow!

Pictures of Sylas Christopher Morrison!

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I was talking to Brianna today and she was telling me about all the pictures they have up on www.Flickr.com. They are available for anyone to see. Just search “Sylas Morrison” and click “see more photos”…there are like 100 images of him!

Remarkably, Sylas is now eight months old! He is so beautiful…and rolls from his tummy over to his side AND his first word was “HI!” but, he’s been saying that for a while. He is one of the most smiley kids I know and when he looks at me with those big beautiful eyes…I never stop smiling!

You’d think the miracle of his birth would get old but, it really doesn’t. Every time I look at him I know I’m looking at a living miracle. Keep praying for him and their family!

Back from Canada

Monday, February 18th, 2008

It’s good to be home again. WOW! I can’t believe how long it’s been since I last blogged! That has to be a record for me!

I want to say thank you to everyone for their prayers, love and support…your kind words have meant a lot to me!

My trip to Canada was really hard and really wonderful…sometimes even in the same moment. I feel closer to my family then ever and nothing can take that away. I’ll forever miss my Grandma but, I’ll hold onto the many memories we made! She was a trooper until then very end and I’m so thankful she didn’t suffer long. She would’ve been 88 years old this August. It’s a comfort to know she lived a full life.

I had very few pictures of my childhood and while staying in Windsor all four grandkids went through Grandma’s pictures. I got some from her courtship with my Grandpa, their wedding, my mom growing up, my mom’s wedding and so much more. These are my treasures now. They make me smile…and It means I can share my Grandma with my kids. I love pictures!!! These are moments that are gone but I’ll be be able to hold onto forever.

Today…I’m nesting. I just want to clean everything and get my house sorted. They say it’s part of pregnancy but, I never really bought into it. After today, I guess it’s true. I haven’t really done anything to prepare for this little boy…and now I’m kicking it in to high gear. It’s so fun to look at blue little things.

On the way down to Canada I was reading a magazine and found a name the I actually liked…even more shocking is the fact that my husband likes it too. This is a first! We don’t know if it’s the keeper but, we finally have a front runner.

Well, it’s back to work! And I can’t wait to sink my teeth in.

My Grandma…Bernice Isabel McCabe

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

I’ll never forget the date February 9th, 2008. It’s the date I got the call from my mom saying my Grandma had died. Even though she was 87,  it was a complete surprise to everyone. She was the only Grandma I ever really knew and she was more like an aunt then a Grandma to me! My mom’s an only child and her dad died before I was born so Grandma was always a big part of our family.

I wrote about my Grandma a few months back when she fell, broke her hip and we weren’t sure if she was going to pull through it but, she did. She was doing well! Improving a little more every day but she was still in pain and that’s exhausting.

So many things are going through my head as I plan the trek to Canada. I miss her already but, I can’t wait to see my family and be with people who knew her like I did. It’s weird but I want to be at her house right now…even if it’s to just be around her things.

I’ve dealt with a lot of death through my friends this past year and I’ve learned a lot but, this is different…this time it’s my Grandma. She’s in a much better place and she has no pain now…that is comforting but, I miss her.

I have so many wonderful memories. I went through my photo albums with Matt last night and we laughed and cried together. I know it will be the same when I get to Canada and meet up with the rest of my family. I’m thankful for every moment I had with her and I have tons of memories to hold on to.

I know some of you have experienced grief by losing loved ones…you understand this time of disbelief, shock, confusion, relief, reflection, and so much more. Please think of my family this week and pray for us.
