My baby started kindergarten this week.

I’ve been so busy i haven’t really slowed down to think about Adriah starting school. My little girl…She was so ready. She barely looked up to say goodbye. I’m so proud of her. There is something really beautiful about watching her at this stage. I think she knows that this is the beginning of something great. She is going where Leyton and Clara can’t and that makes it more special. She’s alone in this and she’s happy making new friends along the way.

But, there’s a part of me that’s torn…I want her for myself. I still want to have a say, pour into her and help her know the truth about who she is and what life is really about. I want to be a part of this growing/changing process. I know in the years to come I will have less and less influence and this is the right order of things…but knowing that mean I want to make the most out of every moment.

Last night when we were praying before she went to bed she said, “God I need to tell you something…tomorrow is – what’s that girls name who sits across from me? Ohh, Brianna! – tomorrow is Brianna’s birthday and I really want to have fun at school!”

Adorable.

I want to be there and see how she shines. She’s changing in front of me but, yet I still see the 1,2,3,4 year old when I look into those brown eyes. You know?

I think the whole change has been the hardest on Leyton. He cries every time we drop Adriah off and asks to be done when we’re in line to pick her up (an hour every time!) He’s been really whiny and i think it’s his 2 year old way of saying, “I miss my sister.” Break my heart. I’m cuddling (and wrestling) a little more these days to make up for it!

There’s something very special about capturing a family at this stage…maybe that I know the value because I’m in the same stage. Kids are full of life and never wanting to be photographed but, ohh the pictures are so worth the effort.

Ohhh I love this family! They have been such an incredible blessing to us (and our kids!) They live right next door and we’re both stay at home Moms who love staying home! We share a mutual love for photography and finally (after living here for almost 2 years) I got to capture their family. Their boys are adorable – look for the shot of little Alex giving his brothers the stink eye.

Kerrington Reilly’s Portraits, Eden Prairie, MN

The Reilly’s have been friends of ours for years and recently Jen took a job working for Hershey in PA. (yeah, I know…I’m loving that she works for a chocolate company! Somebody has to!) Although we’re happy that they are starting a new adventure, they will be missed. Saying goodbye is never easy but, parting with a last photo-shoot makes it easier. Because of pictures…we have memories that will last forever.

We’re praying that your family settles quickly and the job is everything you hoped it would be. PLUS, we’re hoping to get out there and hang with the family really soon! Love you. thank you for letting me capture your family!

When I married Matt 10 years ago there were a few things I knew for sure.

1. I was never going to live in Canada again

2. I was going to go to Bethany Church

3. I was going to be friends with Dave and Vicki Willcock

My friendship with Vicki wasn’t instantaneous. It was a journey. Not cause we didn’t like each other because we did (well, I guess I should only answer for me…I did!) But, we were (and are) opposites in so many ways and trust had to be built. That doesn’t happen in an instant even though I wanted it to. Some things are worth the wait and this friendship is one of them. We had to walk many miles alongside each other and in the sharing of life we became incredible friends. Part of our journey is sharing the births of all 6 of our kids…Somehow it worked out for both of us! We both have a girl, boy, girl family of five now!

Vicki was my best kept secret for a few years…now I feel like everyone is in on it and they are delighted to know her too!

She’s the first person I would call in an emergency and I know she would always be there for me.

She’s one of the rare people that truly delights in serving.

She’s changed over the last couple of years…stronger, bolder in truth, and more confident walk forward even into the unknown.

I’m so proud to you Vicki. Proud to be your friend. Thankful you are in my life.

You can’t get too much of a good thing right? I’ve captured this family before and I will probably be capturing them again in the future. They are a gorgeous family in so many ways! It such a blessing to be able to bless friends with Family Portraits.

I picked a bunch of candids and featured each one of the kids in their spotlight. I love capturing the family without having to have each one looking perfectly at the camera saying cheese – although those are nice to have too!

I know I’ve said this before but I truly believe I have the most beautiful children in the world. Clara, my lovely surprise, is stunning! Her features remain petite even when the rest of her is growing and changing and gaining weight. Like my other two she is in the 96th % for height and 85th % for weight and then sadly only 35th % for her head! I love my kids…each one is sooooo different and perfect in so many ways.

I know someone is going to write asking about the amazing towel in the shots so I’m going to give you the information up front. My good friend Melissa Gruber is talented in so many ways. In the last couple of years she set up an online shop and makes the most creative things for kids. If you’re looking for incredible gift ideas or something fun for you new little one I can’t say enough about this towel! Click here for her blog!

Here’s celebrating Clara’s 6th months! Oh by the way, I wasn’t purposely leaving Leyton out of these pictures…he just happened to be sleeping when we did the photo-shoot! You snooze you lose.

You never know what kind of weather you’re going to get when you schedule a photoshoot in Minnesota. Weather changes so fast and when you’re working around kids naps you only have a small window of time that works. The first time we scheduled this shoot it poured rain all day so we re-scheduled to the middle of a heat wave but, you do what you gotta do to get your family captured. In the midst of sweating profusely we got these shots! I think it was worth it!

“spending” time with my kids…

Isn’t it amazing how I can say things and not really pay attention to what they mean. Today it occurred to me that I was “spending” time with my kids. But, when I slowed down and thought about what that meant it really hit me. Just like spending money spending time is expensive, a choice of mine, a gift to another and sometimes I can receive a gift at the same time.

Almost like every morning I’m given dollars for the day and it’s up to me how I spend them. Those dollars represent my time. A lot of things are important to me: family, friends, faith, a clean home, my work…but, do I spend my time according to what is most important? No.

At the beginning of the summer I spent time with Adriah potting and planting flowers seeds for our deck. As she’s going upstairs for her quiet time she says, “Mom, can you check to make sure I did a good job for you?” When I told her she did excellent she was beaming! One on one time with her means so much…and yet with three kids she doesn’t get me to herself very often. I chose wisely that day.

Today – I have tons of editing to do but, I’m going to take a break and take my kids to the Teddy Bear Concert at the Prior Lake Library. It’ll be crazy and totally fun…and that’s the great part of having 3 kids.

Introducing Amos James – St. Francis Hospital – Shakopee, MN

Every now and then I bring my camera to the hospital when a friend has a baby. I can’t do it for all my friends having babies because it would be a full-time job. (’tis the season, I guess!)

I love babies, especially newborns. They are so tiny. Every time I hold one it’s takes me back to when I first held each one of mine…and yet that seems so long ago. (Clara is 6 months!)

Birth is a simply complicated thing and this momma has really been through it this time…My prayer is that these pictures brighten her day and make her smile!

2. Each family will be given a 45 minute time slot (Normal time slot is an hour and half)

3. Cost is $225 plus tax (Normal Portrait Session $450)

4. A few of your portraits will be on the blog within a week…kinda a sneak peek

5. Receive a disc with 30-50 edited images (with permission to reproduce images)

6. Online viewing and purchasing through Pictage.com (90 days)

I love this family. I’ve been capturing the kids (and family) since they were 6 months. I have to say three years old is a ton easier then 1 or 2 years…especially when there are three running in three different directions.

Preparing for school…

I printed out the Kindergarten list of “must haves” and I was shocked to find out it’s a full page! I know that’s something I’ll probably get used to but, I’m not there yet. So, I went with my list to TARGET and stood there with all the other Mom’s picking out everything needed. Good thing supplies are dirt cheap right now. I am a deal lover – why not save money if you can! (Have I ever told you about Pocket Your Dollars? It’s awesome. Every couple of days she sends out an email with deals all over the Twin Cities. I’m saving money all the time. Sign up – it’s free!)

I’m learning that school is expensive. Clothing, supplies, accessories…gulp. I know this is just the beginning I’ve heard what it’s like once they start in sports and activities. I guess we’ll just have to adjust the budget as we go Adriah is going to a Charter School so I’m investing (and I mean investing!) in her school uniform. She is going to look so cute! I will take pictures!

Since, I feel a little behind the ball…any wise words for the new school mom. Anything you’ve learned that I should know??? And I mean any-thing. From the first day to the last day. Us Moms need to stick together.
